Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese

This is a sweeping tale of orphaned twin boys raised in an African Missionary hospital in Adis Ababa.  Yet this is so much more.  The story evolves around the advances and attitudes to modern medicine, political revolution, women, sexuality, nature vs nurture and, above all, family bonds: all are sympathetically and movingly described. It is an eye opener into the ordinary lives and influences of a country which rarely features in popular literature. I found this one of the most engrossing and fascinating reads for a long time. It will make for great discussions in our Book Group.  Highly recommended, but you may need to skip some of the more medically detailed descriptions if you are squeamish!
